Project Information

The project's expected outcome is to increase agricultural productivity and improve access to markets in 196 communes, in 28 districts of four provinces in the Tonle Sap basin. This will include improved agricultural support and rural financial services, increasing diversification of household economic activities, the creation of on- and off-farm livelihood opportunities and improved rural infrastructure. The selected communes are relatively less developed but have potential for growth and diversification. The project specifically focuses on assisting communities establish livelihood improvement strategies for resource-poor farming households with assets that give them the potential to increase their farm based income.

The project benefits are founded on improved rice productivity and diversified crop production by assisting communities to adopt improved integrated farming systems. Furthermore, the project design aims to trigger broad based development with direct participation of beneficiaries in planning and execution of growth and poverty reduction initiatives, and by strengthening deconcentrated agricultural support service functions particularly at commune and district levels. It will also finance eligible investments in physical assets and capacity development activities that the commune councils have included in their commune development and annual investment plans.

Complementary Information

Gender focal points have brought gender considerations into project planning, training and monitoring, and gender analysis. There is also a need to provide skill training and other measures to empower women economically. The project should have both men and women involved to achieve a shared family vision for improving livelihoods.
