Project Information

The project's overal goals were to promote economic growth and the sound management of the environment. It specifically aimed to (i) increase farm income and raise the value of agricultural production through development of tea and fruit; and (ii) enhance the environment by stabilizing long-term land-use through the planting of tea and fruit on deforested land. To achieve these objectives, the project was designed to provide a credit line for tea and fruit development in 13 provinces. The credit line was supported by a package of technology and market information, research and training.

The project supported the efforts in crop diversification by addressing the lack of long-term credit facilities and the weaknesses in research and extension. It also sought to empower farmers through a participatory process which enables farmers to provide feedback on extension and research. The market information system was aimed at increasing the farmers' bargaining powers.

The project targeted 67,400 tea and fruit farmers, 300 private commercial nursery operators, 830 smallholder green tea processing units and small and medium-scale processing units for tea and fruit
