Project Information

The Regional Technical Assistance (RETA) seeks to improve the ability of communities in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, and Vietnam to prepare for, respond to, and recover from the negative impact of floods and droughts. The Project has prepared three separate investment projects (CAM, LAO, VIE) to provide financing for appropriate flood risk management and drought risk management interventions in each country.

The outcome of the Project is the improved ability of communities and governments to prepare for, respond to, and recover from flood and drought events. Key activities of the RETA include:

• Identifying and prioritizing flood and drought issues in each country (including CAM, LAO, VIE and THA) through the development of a regional and national road-maps for improved flood and drought risk management;
  
• Developing a prioritized program of structural and nonstructural FRM and DRM interventions in each country; and
  
• Preparing feasibility studies for national investment programs in Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Viet Nam based on the county-specific prioritized program of interventions.
  

Complementary Information

The concerns and needs of women and children are central to the development of Community-Based Flood and Disaster Risk Management (CBFDRM) strategies, and were specifically addressed during the design of the country activities in these areas. The key gender issues are related to how families (men, women, and children) cope with natural disasters such as floods and droughts.
